There’s something really modern about formalwear with long sleeves. If Kate Moss is doing it, you know it’s an approved Look; you can bet your bottom dollar (then roll it up and snort). Long before she graced Elle’s Body Issue, Kerry Washington tried it too. A long sleeve dress, that is, in peach melba. And Emmanuelle Chriqui, unsung goddess, stuns in a loose-fitting feline frock, slick ponytail, and killer hoops. So, how do you pull off a long sleeve dress? Let’s take a few cues from the experts: 1. Accessorize. I’m partial to hoop earrings, but cascading chandeliers are another good option. I still haven’t warmed up to ear cuffs, but if your gown is straight rock & roll, I’ll allow an ear cuff, but only if it’s tough and you cut a deep side part like Skrillex. Think about being photographed from the waist up. You don’t want to be mistaken for a 4th grade school photo–you know, the one with the turtleneck? So, go for the gusto when it comes to jewelry. 2. Conversely, less is more when it comes to your purse. A geometric clutch (box, faceted jewel) or sleek envelope are the best accent to Sleevie Nicks.
I know. Wtf is right, Pen. Guys, I have terrible news. ABC made the tragic decision to pull the plug on TV’s best comedy (Arrested Development is on Netflix) because it failed to “find an audience.” Uh, how about the audience failed to find it. Bouncing to 3 different time slots (5, if you count the double episode experiments AKA death sentence on Sundays and Fridays), Happy Endings barely stood a chance. And yet, based on a random sample of my most cultured Facebook friends, they’d much rather spend an evening with Brad, Max, Dave, Alex, Jane, and Penny, than with the cretins on CSI or the prats on Revenge. There’s still a shred of hope for a happy ending. After all, “This is the U.S.A.–Characters welcome is our country’s motto.” No, seriously, USA network is considering picking up Happy Endings to continue eroding any relevance that broadcast television once had stockpiling their arsenal of shows actually worth 30 minutes of your day. While we wait for USA and a few other contenders to make what could be the best decision of their cable careers, I decided to play dress-up with the cast of Happy Endings. Happy Endings begins with the foiled [...]

Mitsumi Flores is an artist from Carlsbad, California with a distinct, some might even say warped, perspective. Taking vaguely familiar characters from his youth and deconstructing them via all manners of injury and distortion: severed limbs, oversized sockets, skin dripping like melted butter; Mitsumi operates within a motif that is equal parts lighthearted and alarming. “I can’t explain what makes me think of it,” says Mitsumi. So where does he most often find himself when these twisted visions visit his subconscious? “I like to doodle in the shower, ‘cause I got one of those glass door things going on. So I’ll sketch some stuff out of foggy glass, then later draw the whole thing out, ink it, and sometimes I’ll take it all the way to digital and finish it.” Hey, everyone’s creative process is different, and one look at Mitsumi’s work should be enough to prompt you to expect nothing less from him! Of course, just because his rough drafts can be wiped away with some scrubbing bubbles, doesn’t mean it’s a completely carefree endeavor. “I’m serious when I do my work because I want it to be the best I can do for myself and the client.
Luxury Jones boots put the “urban” and “cowboy” in Urban Cowboy. With their impeccably curated vintage quality–ever popular on the streets of the chicest cities–and their Southwest stylings, one-of-a-kind Luxury Jones boots are shorthand for confident albeit clunky individualism. In an interview with No Thoughts Magazine, designer Niki Dimitras reluctantly okays a DIY, but calls a spade a spade: “Anyone who makes them for sale is a dick.” Can’t say I disagree with her there! Let’s make like Johnny Cash and walk the line between DIY and dick. The Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous bootie + Cheap Monday’s contrast cow leather belt in power pink and red + braided belt in sand + Obey Spellbinder beaded belt = Sunsets on Baja California Obey’s Free Spirit belt + WeSC Luz belt + Oops I Did It Again boot (folded down) = Bathing Suits & Cowboy Boots And finally, for the girl who’s inspired by Luxury Jones’s bold textural patterns and fringe detailing, but only wants to dip one toe in, there’s the Dance Up On Me bootie. I know, you’re hard pressed to find a collection where these are the tame option.

Like a modern-day version of the Wright brothers, the Syal family work together tirelessly to make something fly. Under the vigilance of older sibling and “Air Traffic Controller” Neil Syal, brothers Rishi and Jai, assisted by “Co-Captain” Sungmoon Chung, created the Flight Crew Collection: a soaring new streetwear label PLNDR has now cleared for takeoff! While Rishi and Sungmoon were still in high school, they combined the savings from their minimum wage jobs, along with their dissatisfaction at the state of fashion in their community, and sought to create something unique. The demand they generated at their high school was enough to convince Neil, then a student at Calfornia State University, Fullerton, that his younger brother and friend were on to something. It wasn’t until after Neil graduated that the Flight Crew Collection could begin to circle the tarmac and even then the Crew was in for a little bit of turbulence. With Neil traveling across the country for his profession, the Crew has to account for time differences and conflicting schedules, in addition to the pressure of staying elevated above their peers. Despite not keeping a residence “in any one state, (Neil) continues to work daily to help bring [...]

You know it’s gotten bad when reports from The Onion could just as well run on NPR. Listen, I didn’t defend T-Pain’s honour and watch “Crank That” tutorials for French Montana’s follow-up to Shot Caller to be a ripoff of an adorable-but-gimmicky Lil Vicious song (which was appropriate, given that when he released it, he was a child.)
My dryer’s buzzer just went off. I’m home from a quick 2-city jaunt out to St. Louis, where I did everything from gallivant around city museum to peek inside Forest Park’s jewel box and !!!!!!!!!!! over their red panda and cheetah, and Chicago where I got schooled on an architectural tour and read Fancy Nancy to the prettiest little 2 year old in the 312 area code. 4 days went fast, needless to say, and warranted only 1 carry-on bag so I had a “make it work moment” and packed light like Erykah Badu. The key to packing for quick trips is to choose items that can be worn multiple ways, like Lira’s Liberty denim in gray, which can be dressed in the Konami code–for all of you who didn’t play Contra, that’s up, up, down, down, left, right, B, A, start. Hellz Bellz’s Hear Me top comprises the dressed “up” look. With sheer fabrics and a feminine cut, it can notch up your denim for dinner or drinks at that posh place that’s too cool to even have a sign. The Xanthe Native sequin top by BB Dakota is a good hybrid top. By day, with a cardigan and Converse, you’re ready for action, whatever the day might bring. [...]
